How to Use Sleep Tape Correctly: A Step-by-Step Guide

Trying sleep tape for the first time is simple, but a few small details make it more comfortable and more effective. Here's how to do it properly.

1. Prep your lips

Make sure your lips and the surrounding skin are clean, dry, and free of lip balm or oil. Adhesive sticks best to clean, dry skin, and any residue can make the strip lift off overnight.

2. Choose the right strip

Use a strip designed for skin, like Noctaseal Sleep Tape, with a hypoallergenic, latex-free adhesive. Avoid household tape or anything not designed for overnight skin contact.

3. Apply it gently

  1. Peel one strip from its backing.
  2. Close your lips naturally, without pressing them tightly together.
  3. Press the strip gently over your lips, from corner to corner, smoothing out any air bubbles.

4. Ease into it on your first night

If it's your first time, leave a small gap at one corner of your mouth. This lets you breathe through your mouth if you need to, while you get used to the sensation. Most people can remove this step once they're comfortable with a full seal.

5. Remove it gently in the morning

Peel the strip off slowly, ideally after washing your face or showering, when the adhesive has loosened slightly. Pulling it off quickly can be uncomfortable on sensitive skin.

A few safety notes

  • Don't use mouth tape if you have a cold, blocked nose, or any condition that makes nasal breathing difficult.
  • Stop use if you notice skin irritation.
  • Mouth tape is a comfort accessory, not a medical device, and isn't a substitute for treatment of a diagnosed sleep or breathing condition.
